“Alternative” collars for our cats and dogs

Alternative Veterinary Medicine

Alternative Veterinary Medicine is the practice that analyzes and takes into consideration a wide range of topics that have a direct impact on the well being of your pet. It includes the areas of Holistic, Integrative and Complementary practices that use a combination of conventional and alternative methods to find the best answers for solving your pet’s problem or distress.

Many doctors that understand alternative canine and feline medical practice will give a comprehensive evaluation that encompasses your pet’s behaviors, diet, environment, emotional stresses, and a variety of other factors. Veterinarians that recognize these practices will provide many additional services that go beyond a standard physical examination.

You can now revitalize your pet's senses with hand made collections of healing gemstone necklaces! What about that? Yes, now is possible to offer “alternative”  necklaces to your “kid”. Aromatherapy is also an effective complementary therapy in psychological treatment, beneficial in alleviating many conditions such as anxiety, stress, and depression. There is an undeniable connection between smell and memory. The term Aromatherapy refers to the therapeutic use of aromatic oils, or "essential oils". Essential oils are the concentrated aromatic essences extracted from plant sources such as woods, flowers, fruits, stems, leaves, and resins.

Did you know that breathing in pleasant scents eases psychological problems by activating positive emotional responses from the part of the brain that controls memory and emotion?

Browse for specialized pet web sites and you will be able to purchase adorable fragrant charms, in variety of textile designs and several colorful styles. And be sure you get them made of 100% cotton! They look good and smell great! Or... you might prefer an exclusive collection of aromatic bandanas. Cat Carriers For Safety

Cat Carriers Are Important

While some people may consider it cruel to cage up your cat it's actually a matter of safety for both you and your cat. For example if you were driving and your cat suddenly jumped on to you, or it got trapped underneath your feet and the brake this could cause a serious accident. Pets can sometimes be unpredictable and for reasons like those mentioned above and more it is always safer to use a cat carrier when transporting your cat to another destination such as the vet.

When choosing a cat carrier you will find there are hundreds of different ones on the market to choose from.  Pick one that is suitable for both you and your cat and remember you will need a place to store it when it is not in use.  A good cat carrier should be both safe and comfortable for your cat, it should have enough room inside for a fully grown cat to have some freedom of movement, and your cat should be able to both stand up and turn around inside of its cage. Air holes on all sides are also needed as this allows the air to fully circulate and your cat to look out.

To make your cat feel comfortable and safe in its carrier it's a good idea to put a blanket in side of it, if your cat has its own blanket on its bedding then that is ideal as the cat will be able to recognize the smell, this should help your cat to feel a little bit safer. The first time you use your cat carrier it is also a good idea to put down some newspaper in side just incase your cat has any "accidents".

It can be awkward getting a fully grown adult cat into its carrier but you can sometimes trick them with food or treats, kittens on the other hand are much easier to get in to one as you can generally just pick them up and place them in side without to much hassle.

Some Dog Training Tips For You And Your Dog

Dog Treats

“On Trust” & “Paid For”  are one of the oldest dog tricks that afford as much entertainment as anything a dog can do since the early 1900s. It is not the easiest trick to be taught but can be elaborated on and presented in several different forms to impress most people.

To teach this trick call your dog to you, allowing him to stand up or sit down, as he desires, and hold his head steady with one hand, while you balance a piece of treat on his nose.

Say to him, “On trust, on trust,” steadying and restraining his head from moving with one hand and holding up a threatening finger with the other and repeating the words, “On trust, on trust”.

After which, release his head, saying “paid for,” and give him a little chuck under the chin, that will cause him to toss the treat up and catch it. Of course, in his first attempts he will not be able to catch the treat, but he should be allowed to eat the treat after it lands on the floor.

Continuous repetition of this training will produce efficiency. Over time you should stop restraining his head with your hand and allow him to balance the treat on his nose until you give him the words “Paid for.”

He can also be taught also to hold the treat between his teeth and not to swallow it until told to do so. This trick can be made more impressive by holding a conversation with your dog. For instance, you might say: “Buddy, old man, here is a very yummy piece of treat, but it is ‘on trust.’”

Slightly emphasize the word “trust” and then go on and say: “I am glad you dislike to eat things on trust, but this I have just learned has been ‘paid for,’” emphasizing the words “paid for.”

Your dog can also be taught to toss the treat on hearing a certain number. To teach this, balance it on his nose and hold his head while you count plainly and deliberately, one, two, three, and then chuck him under the chin. Until he has had a great deal of practice he will toss it up as promptly at one, two, four, as he will at one, two, three, but he must be drilled until he will not toss it until he hears “three,” and it will make it easier for him if you slightly emphasize the “THREE” word.

In time you can use many combinations of figures and he will wait until he hears the emphasized “three.” In working him do not make him wait too long before you say “three,” and allow him to eat the treat.

“Trust” and “Paid For” dog tricks are considerably difficult to master and requires plenty of patience from you. Remember, do not punish your dog if he can’t master the trick, and rather blame yourself for being a lousy teacher. :-) In any case, enjoy training and have lots of fun along the way.

Other Pets Like Hamsters & Bunnies

Other Pets Like Hamsters & Bunnies

There are other types of pets that may be better than the traditional ones like dogs and cats.  These can include small well-known pets such as mice, hamsters or fish. They can also include more exotic pets like snakes, lizards or even monkeys.  The type of pet that may be right for you is strictly a personal choice. There are many types of pets you may want to consider.

Hamsters

The most common type of Hamster that is kept as a pet today is the Syrian Hamster.  Although there are other varieties, different varieties do not get along together.  Even the Syrian Hamster is better to keep one Hamster buy itself in a cage. Sometimes having more than one will cause fighting.
Hamsters can have varying personalities and it is best to avoid ones that are quiet or lethargic.  When choosing a Hamster, choose one that is bright and alert.  This may be difficult to do as Hamsters are nocturnal creatures, which can tend to nip when woken.  Try to pick your pet Hamster in the evening, if possible.
Hamsters can be good pets and they often can be cuddly when handled.  They are fun to watch in their mazes, and exercise wheels. It can also be fun to purchase the paraphernalia that goes along with owning a Hamster.  Such as little Hamster cars and roller balls, a variety of tubes and housing, or little Hamster nests or burrows.
When choosing a Hamster for a pet,  be aware that Hamsters need lots of exercise so purchase a running wheel.  Hamsters are kept in a secure habitat, in cages or aquariums where they cannot escape.  They can be let to run around occasionally, but you must keep a good eye on them when loose.

Rabbits and Bunnies

Rabbits are increasing in popularity as house pets.  Generally rabbits are kept outside in rabbit hutches. They are now believed to be able to be litter trained as inside house pets.  Rabbits range can range in weight from about 2 to 18 lbs. or more, depending on the breed.  There are many types of rabbits (currently 45 recognized breeds) and they come in all sizes and colors.
Rabbits are considered the ideal “Condominium Pet” because they are clean, quiet and fairly easy to care for. They can be trained to use a litter box.  You can usually find rabbits for sale in many pet stores, with the dwarf bunnies outnumbering the other types.
There is nothing cuter than a baby bunny as a pet.  Smaller breeds of rabbits, however, do not make good pets for young children as they are fairly fragile.  Larger rabbit breeds are better for younger children because they are hardier and their bones will not break as easily.  Rabbits can, however, have sharp nails and may bite occasionally.
As mentioned before, there are many other types of pets that you may choose for your family.  You could have a horse for a pet if you live on a farm, or board your horse elsewhere.  You could have a chicken as a pet, or a skunk, or many other types of animals.  I do not recommend,  that you ever take any wild animal to have as a pet.  Exotic animals like monkeys or tiger cubs, although cute, should not be taken into your home as a pet.

Exercise Is For Pets As Well As Humans

Exercise Or Lack Of It Has Serious Effects.

Dogs, like people, can suffer from various mental health issues. They can become depressed, and in this depressed state suffer from loss of appetite, and interest in normal activities. They may seem to mope around a lot and be distracted during your attempts for their attention. Dogs can suffer from aggression, which can also be a mental health issue. And, they can become timid or fearful. If your dog suffers any of these mental health issues, regular exercise may help him to snap out of it.
Consider is your dog in a depressed state, because of the loss of a companion or friend.  Getting your dog in an exercise routine can distract him from his feelings of loss. Then you can direct his attention to other things to get his mind off of it.
Consider if your dog is timid or fearful.  If you take your dog for a walk regularly, he may learn to deal with fear issues. This can be because of his exposure to varied outside stimulus.
If your dog is aggressive towards humans or dogs, walking him may help get him socialized to other animals. Exercise will also relieve some of his pent-up energy so it isn’t directed at others in an aggressive manner.

Exercise Is Beneficial For Pets And Humans

Exercising your dog on a regular basis will also help a normal dog’s mental health. He will be more apt to learn new things because he is constantly exposed to new stimuli. His thinking and problem-solving processes will be in better working order.  He will learn more about the world around him and how to deal with unfamiliar situations.
For example, when taking your dog on one of his walks you come to a busy street corner. Instead of just marching ahead on through the intersection, you and your dog stop for oncoming cars.  After this happens a few times, your dog learns to wait to cross the road until the way is clear. The exercise has increased his learning of how to handle the world outside his home environment.

Exercise Studies Have Shown

It has been proven medically, that exercise supplies oxygen to the brain. Walking, as is seen in humans, increased blood circulation, and oxygen and glucose levels that reaches the brain. This can also help them to “clear their head” and think better. Any movement and or exercise can increase the breathing and heart rates. The more blood that flows to the brain enhances energy production, as well as waste removal.  Studies show that exercise can help cerebral blood vessels grow, even in some extent to middle-aged relatively sedentary animals.
Studies in humans have proved that walking regularly can significantly improve memory skill. This can also improve learning ability, concentration and abstract reasoning. This applies to dogs, so in fact exercise can improve your dog’s ability to think, along with their learning capacity.
In other animal studies, more vigorous exercise like running showed that brain cell survival increased.  In recent studies done with mice, it was found that in sedentary mice, most newly born brain cells died. But when the mice were exercised, the numbers of newly formed brain cells increased. Which in effect this was thought to have made the mice ‘smarter’. Exercise can put off the degenerative effects which cause Alzheimer’s disease and boost the brain’s ability to remember.
This shows the positive effects that exercise can have on animals and humans. This can also result in a better mental health benefit for you and your dog.

Cats America's Most Popular Pet, Cats Can Be Fun

Cats Are A Popular Pet

America's most popular animal, the cat, lives more than half of its life in the older years. Advances in veterinary care, better nutrition and better informed owners have actually helped enhance the quantity and quality of life. Studies show that senior cats have a hard time with weight as the result of lower activity levels. They also have a steady decline in senses, nutrient absorption and fat digestion.
" Among the most important objectives when feeding senior felines is maintaining an ideal weight and keeping that weight steady. Dr. Arnold Plotnick, developed a senior health program to address the special requirements of aging cats at his veterinary clinic. The name of this is the Manhattan Cat Specialists in New york city City.
Owners of senior felines can help aging felines maintain an ideal body weight throughout the senior years. They need to Feed a diet that takes care of their unique dietary needs. Purina Pro Plan, for example, has actually formated its entire line of senior feline foods. These help to deal with the changing nutritional requirements of aging cats. There are two different stages of the senior lifespan: ages 7 to 11 (mature) and 11 and up (senior).

Remember As Cats Age Their Needs Do Also

As cats age, there's a decrease in the body's ability to repair itself. It is hard to have normal body functions and adapt to stresses in the environment. Disease and weight changes prevail throughout the senior lifespan.
Cats are able to deal with weight gain during the growing years. When their activity level declines and metabolic process slows, around age 11, weight loss becomes a higher issue.
The older years are hard for felines because they lose their sense of smell and their taste reduces. This can also lead to losing their interest in food. The capability to absorb crucial nutrients and absorb fat decreases, making eating less efficient.
The unfavorable outcome is that more food travels through as waste and less is utilized for energy. This causes a drop in lean muscle mass and body fat that leads to potentially damaging weight loss.
In addition to having the correct diet, owners of senior felines need to pay attention to their cats' activity levels.  If their weight, eating, grooming and elimination routines change report anything new to their veterinarian.
Many of these changes are a typical part of aging, others may signify a more severe problem. Getting veterinary check ups a minimum of twice a year because major conditions are treatable if captured early.

Dog Parks And Exercise Yards Are A Great Idea

Dog Parks and Exercise Yards

A great exercise option that has developed in recent years is the inclusion of dog parks within city limits. Here dogs can run and exercise in a controlled environment made especially for them. Dog parks are usually fenced areas with gated entry-way and exits. Some have swimming ponds for dogs to use, and most usually have some sort of watering taps or hydrants. They usually have gear so you can pick up and dispose of doggie waste.

Dog parks have come into existence because of the growing pet population and the need for people to interact with and exercise their pets. City planners have recognized this need and are now including dog parks in their urban development plans. Dog parks allow dogs and people to interact together in a social manner that is recognized as being beneficial to society.

Some dog parks are more elaborate than others. Many offer shaded areas for dogs and people to hide from the sun. Some have benches and picnic tables.  Others, as mentioned have swimming ponds or pools for the dogs.  Some parks have separate areas for large and small or timid dogs. Some parks have a significant amount of acreage for the dogs to run in, while others are smaller and compact. But, all dogs are allowed to run free and socialize with other canine companions in a safe, confined and controlled environment.

Dog parks can be great areas for you to take your dog for a romp if your dog has the correct social skills with humans and other dogs. Un-naturally aggressive or possessive dogs should not be taken to a dog park.

Dog Parks Have Some Restrictions

There are a few restrictions to most dog parks that you should be aware of, on top of not bringing an aggressive dog to a dog park:

  • You should never take your dog to a dog park if he is sick or has been diagnosed with a contagious disease. Make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up-to-date.

  • You should also not take a dog that is in heat to a dog park. This can lead to dog fights.

  • Some dog parks also have limits on the number of dogs per handler—typically three dogs per handler. The fear is that one person cannot keep control of more than three animals at a time.

  • Dogs should be allowed to run off-leash. If your dog needs to be leashed to be controlled, he should not be brought to a dog park. But do bring a leash in case your dog needs to be controlled at some point.
  • You should remove any choke-type collars before allowing your dog to run in a dog park. Another dog’s teeth could become caught in the collar while playing causing panic in your dog or the other dog, which could lead to injury.

  • Dog parks are dog play areas, not children’s.  Some parks have age limit restrictions for people attending there.

  • Most dog parks also do not allow food of any kind into the park. Food can incite dog fights.

  • All dog parks require you to clean up after your pet, and most provide the equipment and disposal units for you to do this easily.

  • If you pet is possessive of his toys, do not bring them to the dog park.

  • Do not allow your dog to dig holes, or if he does fill them up before you leave.

Things To Think About

  • It is possible that your dog may contract an illness from another dog. Not all owners may be as diligent as you are in caring for their pet’s health.

  • It is possible that your dog could get into something he shouldn’t and get sick (like an un-lidded trash can).

  • It is possible that your dog may end up in a fight with another dog.
On the whole, though, the benefits of taking your dog to a dog park for exercise outweigh the risks.  It is a great way to help him socialize with other dogs, and for you to socialize with other pet lovers as well.

Neutering Can Be Healthy For Pets

Neutering Your Pet

Neutering and Spaying some people have a hard time knowing the difference.  Here is the dictionary definition from the North America Encarta English Dictionary. Spaying: “to surgically remove a female animal’s ovaries and adjacent parts of the uterus”
Neutering:       “to remove the testicles or ovaries of an animal”
Now that you know, you have to decide if you wish your pet to undergo this procedure.  It is a big decision and can affect your pet significantly, in more ways than one.
Not spaying or neutering your pet can mean that your pet can bear offspring. You have to decide if you want this to happen.  You have to decide whether you wish you pet to be a mother. Or if you wish your pet to stand as a stud for a female.  Your pet in heat is equivalent to a human female going through a menstrual cycle.

Let’s start with cats in heat.

When your cat goes into heat, she can behave differently from what you are used to.  Your cat may become unusually affectionate and may even rub her hind quarters against your furniture, other cats or people.  She will become unusually vocal and may howl for several days at a time.  You may find her assuming a mating position with her head down, forelegs bent and rear quarters and tail raised. She may have her legs treading rhythmically as if she were walking in place.  Cats may also tend to spray everything with a strongly scented fluid.  If your cat does not succeed in mating, she could go into heat as often as every 2-3 weeks. Spaying will stop this and would be a wise choice, unless you intend for her to mate and have kittens.

Dogs in heat

The length and interval of a cycle for a dog in heat can vary with each dog.  On average for most dogs, the time between heat periods is about 7 months.  Some dogs can even cycle every 4 months and some only once a year.  The average length of a heat cycle is approximately 3 weeks.  Some can be shorter (as little as 7-10 days) and some can be longer (4 weeks or more.)
How do you tell if your dog is in heat?  During the first part of the heat cycle, you will notice some bleeding and swelling of the vulva.  There may be an increase in urination.  You will probably notice an increase in male dogs hanging around your house.  During this initial part of the cycle, your female pet will not allow the males to breed with them. Although the males may be persistent.  The next phase of the cycle will she allow a male to breed with her. This phase can last anywhere from 4-21 days.  After that the female will start to go out of heat and be less willing to mate.
Your female dog will allow almost any male to breed with her. If you do not want mixed puppies, it is best to keep your pet locked up. You can hire a stud to service her, or get her spayed.   If you spay your pet, it is best to wait until the heat cycle is over to decrease complications.

Spaying, Neutering Can Be Healthy

There can be health benefits to neutering and spaying your pet.  Spaying can provide a decreased chance of mammary tumors.  Your pet will also have less of a chance of contracting pyometra a uterine infection requiring surgery. Your pet will also have less of a chance of getting metritis (which is an infection after delivery).
The decision to not spay or neuter your pet, comes with the responsibility of finding good homes for the offspring.  Although it is possible, this can be a very tedious and time-consuming task.  And, you really should consider the overpopulation of dogs and cats in today’s world also.  Many are left abandoned by their owners.  You only have to visit your local humane shelter to discover many unfortunate animals.

Jack Russell Terriers A Hearty Breed

Jack Russell Terriers everyone knows about the energy of little Jack Russell Terriers.  The Jack Russell Terrier (or Parson Jack Russell Terrier) is a sturdy little dog. Terriers are known in dog circles for his hunting ability of small animals, such as fox or raccoons. He is also known for being fearless, energetic and having a lively, happy disposition.
The Jack Russell Terriers are categorized as a working dog that has a broad genetic make-up. They are not entirely a purebred breed and occasionally do not breed to type.  They generally are about 12” to 14” in height and weigh about 13-17 lbs.
These small terriers were originally designed to bark at and dig up their hunting prey. So in today’s world, they may exhibit excessive barking behaviors and be uncontrollable in their digging practices.
These dogs have different coat types: smooth coated, broken and rough (a coarse coat, with longer straight hair). Note that all coat types shed, with the smooth coated variety typically shedding the most.  The Jack Russell is typically white with tan, black or brown markings. They require regular brushing as they do tend to shed, and the wiry coated ones require regular trimming.
This terrier is a sturdy looking, muscular dog with a wide chest.  They typically have small “v” shaped ears that drop forward. Their legs are short, but these dogs are balanced and proportionate in appearance.  They usually have cropped tails.

Jack Russell Terriers Are Very Intelligent

Jack Russell Terriers are little bundles of energy. They are athletic and highly energetic, and require a lot of exercise and activity. Jack Russell Terriers also tend to have strong chasing instincts from their hunter origins. They are very intelligent and can be quite stubborn. As mentioned, they like to dig and can be quite vocal.  They are however, very loyal, fearless and quite protective.
These little dogs require a lot of activity and exercise to keep them healthy and mentally balanced. They love to be the center of attention.  If they are bored however, they may ‘create’ activity for themselves, which will usually involve some mischief.
Jack Russell’s can be aggressive, which stems from their hunting background. Because they had to be aggressive and fierce with the animals that they hunted.  They may tend to give the occasional ‘nip’ if over-corrected by their owners. Although they are intelligent and are easy to train, their pet owner needs to show them who is boss.
Jack Russell Terriers are sometimes considered to be undesirable to have with small children. They do not take the abuses of small children well because they can consider any small life form as prey.  Terriers are not good to have with other small animals in the house. They tend to be especially hard on cats because of their strong hunting instincts.
Jack Russell Terriers are sturdy enough that you do not have to be overly careful when handling them. They tend to make extremely good watch-dogs and are very defensive of their families. Often considered lovable, funny, and extremely loyal. If handled correctly they can make an amusing pet that will not be dull.

Exercise Your Pet's In Winter Or Summer

Exercise in Winter or Summer

In exercising your dog, take into consideration what the weather conditions are like in the area where you live. You need to consider the type of dog when dealing with winter or summer exercise, or hot or cold climates.  Your small Chihuahua may have trouble exercising outside on a very cold winter day because of his short coat. Alternately, a dog with a heavy coat, like a Newfoundland dog, may have trouble dealing with exercising in hotter weather.
Here are a few tips in helping to deal with exercise in varied climate conditions:

Summer Weather Exercise

When exercising your dog in hot weather, be sure that you have a water supply handy for him.  If he is in an exercise yard, be sure that water is nearby so that he does not become dehydrated.  If walking, hiking your dog, bring extra water for your dog, as well as a collapsible or travel bowl.   (Tip: Letting him drink out of a running stream or river may put him at risk for parasites. It is best to take along drinkable water for him.)
If your dog in a exercise yard, be sure that there is shelter or protection from the sun. A dog can easily become overheated and suffer from heat stroke in an unprotected hot sun area.
On very hot days, if your dog is heavy-coated, exercise for him in a climate-controlled air-conditioned area.
Swimming is a good summer activity for most dogs, large or small, light or heavy-coated.

Make Sure They Have Plenty Of Fluids

Be aware that the hot sun can heat up sidewalks to the point where your dog may burn his feet.  If the pavement is hot, take your dog to a grassy area or a dog park for a run instead.
The hot summer weather is also a time for ticks and fleas to be in abundance. Make sure your dog has adequate protection for these pests.
When exercising your dog in summer, be aware how much he pants as to how the heat is affecting him.  Dogs do not sweat as humans do, but pant to release the heat from their bodies. If your dog is panting excessively, it may be a sign that he has had enough exercise for the day.
A heavy-coated dog may benefit from a shorter haircut in summer weather to keep him cooler and more comfortable.
If you live in a hot area, you may also need to take into account the dryness of the area.  Excessive exercise in extremely dry climates can cause breathing problems in some dogs.

Winter Weather Exercise

If your dog is short haired, buy him a coat to help him keep warm on winter walks.
Be aware that ice and snow can get between your dog’s toes and may cause him to limp with pain. Check your dog’s feet and remove the ice and snow.
You may want to invest is dog booties for your dog’s winter walks. Both large and small breed dogs will benefit from these foot protectors.
The salt on city sidewalks can also affect your dog’s paws. As mentioned above, your dog may benefit from dog booties.  There are also salves that you can buy to help relieve your dog’s chapped or sore feet.
It is as important for you to take along water for your dog in winter as it is in summer.  Don't let your dog lick the ice on dirty city streets when he may be thirsty during his exercise walk.
Be sure not to leave your dog outside in his yard or exercise area too long when it is cold.  On extremely cold days, try to plan indoor exercise activities for him.
Make Sure They Have Shelter
Ice can be just as slippery for dogs as it is for humans.  Help your dog to avoid icy patches on walks or runs.  They can slip and injure themselves just as humans can. They can pull muscles or break limbs when falling on slippery ice. Try not to exercise your dog by throwing a ball in icy areas.
Ice can also be sharp and jagged and can cut your dog’s feet. Watch for it.
The wetness of snow or sleet can get under your dog’s fur and he could suffer from hypothermia.  Not all dogs are suited to extreme cold weather conditions or have water resistant fur. Do not leave your dog outside for prolonged periods in unprotected areas in wet, cold conditions. And, while you are on walks be aware of his body condition and temperature.  Again, perhaps a waterproof dog coat may help.
Another thing to be aware of when exercising your dog in winter conditions are the ice and snow covered trees.  Tree limbs laden with ice and snow can break and fall, and possibly injure your dog.  Try to keep your dog out of tree covered areas in these conditions.  Plan your dog’s outside exercise in safe areas.

You can likewise call a pet sitting organization if you don't have any other individual as a top priority. Who ever sits, make sure they are dependable to be at your home each and every day at the right times. If you have various pets, have somebody you know house sit and stay overnight in your home.

Kittens Needs And How To Take Care Of Them

 Cat Toys

A New Litter of Kittens

All pet health is important, but those pets that are new to this world may need a little extra care and attention to keep them safe and healthy. If your cat has recently had a litter of kittens, you are automatically a second mother to those adorable little additions. It is up to you to make sure that you provide the best healthy living environment possible for those new little bundles of life as they grow during their kitten hood.
During the first few days the kittens’ life, the mother cat will spend the majority of her time being with them. This is natural and to be expected.  To aid her in this, you should move her food and water close to her so that she doesn’t have to move far to find nourishment.  Check the mommy cat a few times a day just to make sure that she is producing milk and feeding the kittens properly.
If your find the mother cat does not stay with her kittens, it may be an indication that something is wrong. First-time mothers are especially prone to bouts of anxiety.  An indication the mother cat is worried about her kittens may be if she moves them or hides them often.  She may feel threatened (even by you) and it could cause her to kill them as a form of protecting them.  If you feel the mother cat may be exhibiting anxious qualities, closely monitor her activity with them.  You may even have to consider keeping her caged.

Kittens Need To Stay Warm.

Kittens need a very warm atmosphere in order to thrive. If the mother cat does not stay with them, you may need to supply heat from some outside source. Large litters will typically stay warmer, by using their combined body heat for warmth. Keep the temperature where the newborn kittens are about 85-90°F for at least the first week of life.  Mother cats may also feel that their kittens are in danger if there is too much light around.  A solution is to place a blanket over the  box which may help relieve some of the mother cat’s anxiety.

Kittens Mostly Eat And Sleep When Born

Do not be too alarmed if they do not move around much at first. For the first two weeks of life, they sleep, eat, then sleep again to about 90% of the time. Crying their little ‘me-ows’ is also common especially when the mother leaves for any length of time.   If the kittens cry excessively, maybe they are not getting enough to eat or they may be sick. The best idea is to call your veterinarian if you feel this may be the problem.
You may want to call your vet for special instructions if there are more than 5 kittens in the litter.  In that case, mother may not be able to supply enough milk to feed all the kittens.
In general, the best thing to do with a new litter is to seek advice from your vet.  He can tell you what to expect and how to handle any situation that may come up.  Kittens are cute, sweet and are also fragile.  Be cautious in handling them and in dealing with them.  After all it is not only your mother cat’s responsibility to keep them healthy and safe.  In a way, you are their mother too because they are part of your family.

Cat Breeds, There Are Many To Choose From

Cat Breeds The Sphynx Cat

One of the most unusual breed of cats, and also considered a fairly rare breed, is the Sphynx Cat. It is also known as the Canadian Hairless. This cat’s ‘hairlessness’ is based on a natural genetic mutation that has been nurtured by selective breeding. Even with all the selective breeding it is still considered a very stable cat breed. This breed of cat is generally genetically sound and healthy with few health problems. They have a medium-long body and are of an average weight.
Basically the Sphynx Cat looks like a bald cat with no hair, but it is not always totally hairless. Sometimes they can be covered with a very fine soft down-like fur that is almost imperceptible to the human eye and touch. It is like the soft texture of chamois leather and the pattern on the cat is the color a normal cat’s regular fur-coat would be. The skin can be quite warm to the touch due to its lack of coat. They may typically have short, soft, fine hair on their ears, muzzle, tail and feet. They may also have whiskers and eyebrows, but these can be absent as well. The eyes and ears of this cat often appear over-large for their head size, but they generally have a pleasant expression on their face.
These cats are usually described as quite intelligent. They are often extroverted and love to be the center of attention. Like some people they can be very affectionate or not. Some are very inquisitive, energetic and mischievous. They get along well with other animals in the household.

Be Aware Of The Temperature For Them

Because of their lack of hair, these cats can become cold. The rule is that if it is too cold for you, then it will be too cold for this cat. When cold, they do however, tend to curl up with a human companion or other animal friend, or possibly will curl up under a blanket.
These type of cats do not have the hair most cats have and do not need brushing. But they do secrete an oil from their skin. This results in them having to be bathed frequently. If they are acclimatized to baths from kitten-hood this should not present a problem. The Sphynx cat’s ears also need regular weekly cleaning.
If you are thinking of getting this breed for a pet, be aware that these are a rare breed. They are generally not easily procured.  Specific breeders of Sphynx cats generally have a long waiting list for this type of cat.

Pet Insurance Do You Really Need Pet Insurance?

Pet Insurance
In today’s world it isn’t only human medical treatments that command high prices.  Medical fees for your pet’s health can lead into the thousand’s quite easily.  An average cost if your dog is involved in a motor vehicle accident is approximately $4,890.00, or if your dog requires cancer treatments the cost can run about $3,600.00.
No one likes to think of what may happen if your pet gets sick and possibly needs treatment.  And no one likes to think about what may happen if you can’t afford those expensive treatments to make your pet well again.
Pet insurance helps you budget in the event that your pet needs to be seen by a veterinarian.  A pet insurance plan can cover your pet for anything from eating a sock, getting an eye infection, cancer or diabetes, to developing heart worm.  Also if your pet is ever involved in an accident (such as being hit by a car) pet insurance would cover the costs for his injuries.

Pet Insurance You Need To Shop Around

A pet insurance policy is paid with a monthly premium for a plan to help you cover the medical costs of your pet’s treatments in the event of an illness or accident.  There is usually a deductible involved, which is an amount that you have to pay up front.  The plan then usually covers the balance.  Be cautious when looking at plans though, which treatments will be covered under the particular plan you choose.  A cheaper plan may not cover everything (such as expensive radiation treatments if your pet develops cancer).
There are different plans available, you will have to do a little research to find the best plan for you.  Pets as young as 8 weeks old are covered and usually they do not require a medical for your pet.  Be aware though, that some plans do have an upper age limit.  It is best to shop around for a plan that suits you.
Having a pet insurance policy in today’s world is recommended for your pet. There is nothing worse than not being able to help your pet just because you cannot afford the medical bills.  It seems a small price to pay for the peace of mind.  When deciding whether pet ownership is in your budget, this is one area where extra costs may be involved.

Breeds Of Birds There Are Many Here Are Six

Name Your Bird by Breeds

Many pet owners have dogs or cats, but being a bird owner can be just as much fun.  Birds have many different breeds, each has their own unique little personalities, no matter what kind of bird pet you have.  You could have a talking parrot, a bobbing cockatiel or a rambunctious macaw that can provide hours of fun and amusing interaction. Even the little songbirds, like canaries or finches, can capture your heart.
Naming your new bird friend can be a lot of fun too.  There are so many cute names that you can use.  How you name your new pet is up to you.  You can name your pet according to the breed of bird it is, use a bird-type name, or simply choose a cutesy name that you like.  It would be a nice idea to give your birdie friend a name that has a meaning or a story behind it so that it can become a conversation piece when others ask.  This can seem to give your bird a little excitement or interest.

Here Are 3 Breeds

Canary             Originally discovered in the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, canaries can come in yellow, red or white colorations.  They are a highly active bird and the males have a beautiful song.  It is entertaining to have toys and mirrors for them to play with, or even a birdbath.
Parrot              There are a couple of different types of parrots, one of which is the African Grey, which also comes in a different varieties (like the Congo African Grey or the Timneh African Grey).  These are medium sized birds with varying coloration, usually with some grey feathering. These birds are intelligent and have the ability to communicate (speak).  They can live up to 50 years.
Lovebird         This is a smaller member of the parrot family so a lot of the same names may be appropriate.  They have striking colors and patterns, and are easy to train.  They average about 4-5” in length and are sturdy, healthy little birds.

Here Are 3 More Breeds

Parakeet          This is also a smaller member of the parrot family.  Parakeets are hardy birds who can sometimes be trained to talk. They are colorful, easy to train and are popular pets.
Cockatiel         Cockatiels are also members of the parrot family.  They are about 12” long, have striking colors and are intelligent and easy to train.  They come in color varieties of Cinnamon, Lutino, Pearl, Pied, Grey, and White-faced, but the most common is the Grey Cockatiel.  These birds are native to Australia.

Cockatoo         The great thing about this bird breed is the bird’s need for a lot of attention and interaction from their owners in order to be happy and healthy.  They love to be petted and played with and are a highly social bird.  They are affectionate and are not particularly noisy.  These birds are generally white or light-colored and are native to Australia, New Guinea, South and Southeast Asia.  They come in two varieties:  the Umbrella Cockatoo, which is named for a crest of feathers around its head (hence the umbrella name) and the Sulphur Cockatoo.

Pet's Age Just Like Humans With Similar Problems

Your Aging Pet's

Pet's when young, are often frisky and playful.  You will find that as your pet grows into adulthood he will settle down and become less active.  He still may love to chase a ball or play with you, but you will find that he also spends a lot more time sleeping.  That is just the ‘nature of the beast’ and is very natural.  It does not mean that something is wrong with your pet.
As a young puppy or kitten your pet may have eaten everything in sight to keep up with his growing physical body.  As your pet's age, they may become more finicky towards certain foods.  They might have discovered what his likes and dislikes are. They also know what he can get away with in the way that you feed him.
He may not want to eat that dry kibble now because he has learned that you will replace it with table scraps if he waits long enough.  He will also be more in tune with what his body requires.  For example, you may find that your cat or dog now eats grass to supply his bodily needs for greens (for digestion).  It is necessary therefore, to search out the type of food your pet’s aging body needs.  You can find pet foods that are more suitable to adult animals in all pet stores and grocery stores.
You will also find that you will need to feed your pet a bit less.  They are now not as active and will burn less food-fuel.  This can cause them to gain weight, and keeping your pet at a healthy weight is just as important as with people.  Being overweight can lead to other health problems.

Your Pet's Aging Process

Your pet’s body will also go through the aging process, just as humans do. Pet's can suffer from many of the same problems that people do when aging.  They can get cancer, contract cataracts in their eyes, and suffer from arthritis.
In order to keep your pet in ultimate health, it is important that you keep up with his regular veterinary check-ups.  Your vet can help you keep on top of any ailments your pet many suffer from due to age, and be able to provide medication to help keep him comfortable.  You will find that a dog suffering from arthritis can benefit from some of the same types of medicines that humans do (like glucosamine or anti-inflammatory medicine—but there are special brands and dosages just for pets, so do not use the human version on your pet!)
You may also find that your dog may become more irritable with old age.  That is because his brain is not receiving the same amount of oxygen than when he was younger.  Blood vessels leading to his brain become less elastic and his lungs become less efficient, which can lead to small hemorrhages in his brain.  This is also the reason that he may not tend to learn new things as quickly (remember the old saying: ‘You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”)
Dogs can also suffer from old age dementia just as humans can.  He may become more disoriented and may even lose a little bladder control.  His sleep times may become erratic (he may tend to reverse his sleep order—sleep during the day and be restless at night) and, as mentioned, he may become more irritable.
As your pet ages, as mentioned, he will become less active.  It is not a good idea to try to get him to over-exercise at this point in his life.  It is natural for him to be more sedentary. “Let sleeping dogs lie.”
Older dogs are also more prone to tumors, but the vast majority are benign and are nothing to worry about.  If you do find your pet has a bump or growth, it is best to consult with your veterinarian, especially if it changes in size or shape and grows rapidly.

Some Things To Consider

Here is a short list of things you can do to make you and your dog’s more comfortable as he grows older:
  • Take him out for a walk more frequently, but for shorter lengths of time
  • Feed your dog smaller meals, but more frequently
  • Take your dog outside to relieve himself right after feeding (so those accidents don't happen)
  • Make sure his sleeping space has a comfortable blanket and is out of drafts
  • Do not leave him out in the cold for extended periods of time
  • Keep regular vet check-ups, and consult with your vet about medication. Your pet may require medications to help relieve aging symptoms. As an older pet, you may want to increase his veterinarian visits to twice a year.
  • Keep an eye on your pet’s weight
  • Feed your pet age-appropriate food
It is sad that we sometimes have to outlive our pets , but the life cycle cannot be ignored.  It used to be thought that you could compare one year of human life to seven dog years.  That is not considered the case today.  As with humans, medical treatments and advancements have progressed and dogs are healthier.  Now it is thought that one year of human life can be compared to five dog years.

Veterinarians Are Someone To Choose With Care

Tips For Choosing Veterinarians
It is essential in dealing with your pet’s health issues to have the right vet for your pet.  Different veterinarians can specialize in certain types of pets, for example, there are distinct cat doctors or vets that specialize in snakes or other exotic creatures.  There are also ones that are general practitioners that deal with all types of animals.
Below are a few tips for you to find the right veterinarian for your pet.:
Look for veterinarians as soon as you get your pet home. It is not a good idea to wait until your pet is ill before trying to find a vet.  Just as with your own doctor, your pet needs to have a vet that it is comfortable with.  Regular trips, even just for check-ups, can reassure your pet when it is truly in need.
Of course you want to find a vet that specializes or is good with the type of pet that you have, but the best way to find a good vet is to ask around. Ask friends and other family members who they use for their pets or who they could recommend.
Contact the top three choices and find out if you can take a tour of their facility before making a decision. Ask if you and your pet could possibly meet with them prior to making an appointment or commitment. You will want to see how the vet interacts with your pet and with you as well.
Ask for references you need to (other than those of your friends or relatives) to discover any if there is any bad background history
Evaluate the premises at the veterinarians facility. Be aware of how well the building is taken care of—if it is clean and properly kept? Are there separate sections for different types of pets—cats and dogs often react when in each other’s company and keeping them separate may be a bonus. Ask other pet owners in the waiting room how they feel about that vet.  As them about waiting times.
Find out what hours and times the facility is open. This may be crucial if your pet is sick and you need a pet doctor immediately.
Note how far away the vet is from your home. Again, this may provide an important factor in your access to the vet.  If your pet is hit by a car, for example, getting him to the vet as soon as possible could save his life.
The veterinary clinic location can also be a concern for your convenience of bringing your pet to the vet. Is the location within an easy drive from home and work?  Does it have parking?  Is there an area nearby where you can walk your dog (for a quick pit- stop) before the visit?  These factors can all play a part in your vet choice.
Ask the veterinarian questions about his qualifications. Pretend you are an interviewer for a job and remember it is important that you find the right vet for your pet.
Ask what special equipment the facility may have on site if your pet has a special need. This vet may offer on-site tests or treatments that may be beneficial.  Sometimes certain treatments are out-sourced to another practice (which you may not like). Ask if they also provide emergency care for after hours because not all clinics do.
Ask if there is financial aid available if this were to become an issue (say if you pet develops cancer and needs treatments).
Find out if this clinic has more than one vet on staff. Some clinics have multiple veterinarians and your pet may not always see the same person.  Find out how it is decided who will look after your pet and if you can see the same person all the time.  (This pertains to your pet’s comfort level by dealing with someone they already know when crisis times arise and your pet is ill.)  Will your pet’s care be a team effort, and are you comfortable with that approach?
Some vet clinics offer seminars and information videos on pet care. Does this one have resource materials that you can borrow to learn more about your pet and their care?  Having these resources may indicate how concerned this vet is in the overall well-being of your pet.
It is also important to consider vet prices. Although you may think this will not be an issue, it is still important to compare apples with apples.  Sometimes a price that one vet offers may include painkilling medication and monitoring while another’s vet’s prices won’t. Prices can also vary significantly due to their overhead costs.
Choosing the right veterinarians for your pet before you really need it can help you and your pet when in a health crisis.  You must remember that owning and taking care of a pet is a responsibility, but one that provides very satisfying rewards.  Imagine yourself holding that sweet innocent animal that is looking to you to take care of all of its needs.
